GoGo Penguin : Koyaanisqatsi a new score performed

Tickets on sale Wed 17th May 9am GoGo Penguin Koyaanisqatsi A new score (a new score performed live) In 2017 GoGo Penguin will be touring an exhilarating new project featuring a live performance of their original score to Godfrey Reggio’s cult film Koyaanisqatsi performed live with the film.Originally scored by Philip Glass, Koyaanisqatsi is a remarkable cinematic masterpiece and a firm favourite of the band’s for it’s powerful fusion of music and image. In 2015 GoGo Penguin wrote and performed their new score for the film as part of the opening season of Home – a new centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film in Manchester. The audience response was over-whelming and the band has chosen to revisit the project in 2017. GoGo Penguin’s richly emotional music offers a perfect contemporary dialogue with Reggio’s profound images. Moving from fragile beauty to powerful frenzy their rich new score reflects the original themes ofthe film and in performance offers an over-whelming audio-visual experience that will appeal to fans of GoGo Penguin and cult cinema in equal measure. This production was originally commissioned by HOME in Manchester as part of the Music and Film Project, supported by Film Hub North West Central, part of the BFI Film Audience Network , and the PRS for Music Foundation. Photo credit Sarah Leech Home Manchester Koyaanisqatsi - This experimental film looks at the world and more specifically the effect man has had on the landscape and the environment. Without narration, the film shows the world in a pristine condition and untouched: blue skies, beautiful landscapes and endless vistas. The man-made world is much less appealing. Essentially a montage using a variety of film techniques to provide a visually stunning montage of images FURTHER LINKS

Noveller with support from Magic Pockets

Dhalgren Sound welcomes Noveller to Dublin for her first ever show in Ireland. Noveller is the solo electric guitar project of Los Angles based composer and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Handling the guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer. In 2014, Lipstate announced her signing with Fire Records. Fire released Noveller's latest full-length 'A Pink Sunset For No One' in Febuary 2017 and her previous album 'Fantastic Planet' in January 2015 and also re-issued Noveller's critically acclaimed albums 'No Dreams' and 'Glacial Glow' in early 2016. She's previously released records on No Fun Productions, Important Records, Weird Forest, Taiga, and her own imprint Saffron Recordings. Noveller has toured with Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Radiolab, Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, U.S. Girls, & Aidan Baker. Lipstate has collaborated with several renowned musicians, including JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Manorexia), Carla Bozulich (Evangelista, The Geraldine Fibbers), David Wm. Sims (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth). She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave, Parts & Labor, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars” Ensemble, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. All of Noveller's releases are available to listen to on Bandcamp here; noveller.bandcamp.com Magic Pockets is a progressive/synth/drone project by Ruadhan O’Meara (of Dublin based Synth-Metal act No Spill Blood). He has been creating music under this moniker since 2012. The debut LP ‘Volcano of The Bleeding Skies’ was released on Vinyl & Digital download by Penske Recordings in late 2016. The album was recorded using an array of vintage synthesizers, drum machines, miscellaneous electronics and manipulated samples, all sent to 1 inch tape. Kenny's Bar

Main Street

Lahinch

Frankie Gavin, Noel Hill & Brian McGrath

Kenny's Bar, Lahinch are pleased to present the virtuosic music of internationally acclaimed fiddle player Frankie Gavin and master of the concertina Noel Hill who will be exquisitely accompanied by Brian McGrath on piano and banjo. The combination of these three master musicians is sure to be a delight to behold in the intimate setting of Kenny's Bar on Ireland's wild atlantic coast. Frankie Gavin is a fiddle player of traditional Irish music from County Galway coming from a musical family; parents and siblings being players of the fiddle and accordion. As the age of 4 he strated playing the tin whistle and, later, the flute, making his first T.V. appearance three years later. He received some formal training in music, but his musical ability on the fiddle is mainly self-taught. When 17 years old, he gained first place in both the All Ireland Under-18 Fiddle and Flute competitions. Mainly learning by ear, he was strongly influenced by the 78 recordings of Michael Coleman and James Morrison. In the early 1970s Gavin played musical sessions at Galways's Cellar Bar, with Alec Finn (bouzouki/guitar), Mickey Finn (fiddle), Charlie Piggot (banjo), and Johnnie (Ringo) MaDonagh (Bodhrán). This led to the formation of De Dannan in 1973. His Currandulla connection came in useful when De Danann were looking for a singer, and it was he who came up with Dolores Keane from nearby Cahirlistrane. When De Danann brought out their first album, her singing of The Rambling Irishman gained a lot of airplay for the group. Although De Danann has had many highpoints over a quarter of a century, particularly with the singing of Dolores Keane and Maura O’Connell and the box playing of Mairtin O’Connor, Frankie’s powerful virtuoso fiddle playing has always been at the core of the De Dannan sound. Frankie has recorded 16 albums with De Dannan as well as a number of solo albums, and three collaborations: one a tribute to Joe Cooley entitled ‘Omos do JoeCooley’ with Paul Brock; a fine...

Wexford Spiegeltent Festival

No.1 North Main St

Wexford

Corner Boy

***This is a standing show, strictly over 18's*** Spiegeltent favourites Corner Boy will release their first record in three years this autumn, 2017 following on from 2014’s critically acclaimed True North E.P. In 2014 the group decided to take a step back from releasing new material in order to explore the context and narrative of their sound going forward. Fast forward three years and they have returned. The music is a dark & energetic soundscape of Appalachian mountain roots and the Mississippi Delta blues with soaring gospel choruses anchored by a raw contemporary Irish influenced folk sound. The record will be recorded in Grouse Lodge studios in September 2017 by grammy award winning producer Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine show, Dropkick Murphys, Gaslight Anthem etc..) Corner Boy’s music blends together traditional Irish instruments and folk progressions with contemporary musical themes. All of which gives Corner Boy its distinctly energetic sound juxtaposed with a haunting narrative.

Central Arts

Central Hall, 123a Parade Quay

Waterford

Live, Late & Loud

This year is the 30th anniversary of Waterford's BA Music course and this is a wonderful excuse for some exuberant and musical celebration. The party will kick off in raucous style on October 19th when bands featuring past and present BA Music students will take to the stage in Central Arts from 10PM onwards. Graduates from Waterford Institute of Technology have been enhancing the Arts & Entertainment industry both nationally and internationally for 30 years. Waterford based band King Kong Company recently received an award for being Ireland's best live act and they stormed both Áras an Uachtaráin and Glastonbury this summer. Six members of the King Kong family are graduates of WIT, the band members all met while students in Waterford and one of them now lectures on the BA Music course. The reach and influence of graduates from the BA Music course at WIT is immense. Mark Graham, Music Technology lecturer at WIT and drummer, trombonist and vocalist with King Kong Company is organising the event and he promises it will be an entertaining and diverse evening. "The bands we have playing on October 19th aren't just some of the best in bands in Waterford, they're some of the best in the country. We're lucky to be able to have them play and even luckier that some of them have made Waterford their base after graduation. The bands feature musicians from Dublin, Carlow, Wexford, Kilkenny and of course Waterford. I'm constantly blown away by the raw talent displayed by the students on the BA Music course, but these three bands have distilled that talent into something powerful. It's going to be a savage night". Anna-Liese tick all the indie-rock boxes. They've recently completed and Irish tour promoting their second EP 'Stand on My Own', and it's been receiving rave reviews. These boys excel at guitar driven melodic rock and have firmly established themselves as an energetic force on the Irish original music scene. All four members of the band are graduates of the BA Music...
