Exhibition: Extended Reading – Writing as a Visual

Exhibition: Extended Reading – Writing as a Visual Art Exhibition Times Monday April 23 – Sunday April 29 Mon – Fri 10am – 5.30pm Sat & Sun 12pm – 5pm An exhibition of prints and works by Sam Winston, including his award-winning project with Oliver Jeffers, A Child of Books. Combining the rich landscapes of children’s literature with intricately detailed typographic art, this exhibition looks to celebrate the power of classic stories through letterform and the art of the book. Operating at the intersections of where visual culture and literature meet, Winston’s art is concerned with language not only as a carrier of messages but also as a visual form in and of itself. Sam Winston is a fine artist whose work has been featured in many special collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, the Tate Galleries in London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He works and lives in London. We are delighted to feature one of Sam’s illustrations from A Child of Books (by Sam Winston and Oliver Jeffers, Walker Books) on this year’s programme cover.

CS 2018 wk #16

Features: 8.30 Celia Bsoul 9.10 9.30 PM Spunkski 10.30 TIMETHIEVESband FAQ of the Circle Sessions (CS) - Who are you and what do you do? We are a performance collective of poets, musicians, comedians and other performance artists. We meet every Monday night in the International Bar (Wicklow Street) between 8pm and 11.15pm and perform anything and everything. We are now 4 years old and in that time we have grown from a small group performing in the Harbour Bar, Bray to a much larger group who have done everything from showcases (at The Sugar Club, Whelans, The Academy and other) to albums (Completed in December 2015) to festivals (such as Electric Picnic!). - Are you an open mic? Yes and no! We are similar to an open mic in that we encourage members of our audience to perform, however, the main difference is that we do not normally use a mic! The performers are there to perform and the audience are there to listen. There is a mutual respect between the two such that amplification is rarely required, which creates its own unique atmosphere. - Who performs? The performers are split up into 3 different groups: • Impromptu • Featured • Member - What’s an ‘impromptu’ performer and how do I become one? At the Circle Sessions we love a variety of performance above everything else. We love that even though proceedings are well organised, we can often be pleasantly surprised at what happens next. That’s where our jar comes in! If you have never performed at CS before, or you’re there every week, all you need to do is stick your name on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. We read from the jar at various points in the night; normally 2 or 3 acts at a time. Slots are 5 mins (1 piece) maximum. We always aim to have people up and performing within 60 minutes signing up. Having performed as an impromptu performer, you can request a featured slot. - What’s a ‘featured’ performer and how do I become one? A featured performer has a 15-20 minute uninterrupted performance slot...

Here All Night

Gare St Lazare’s touring production: a hybrid performance of music, theatre and visual art First presented at Brighton Festival in 2013, and since seen at the Lincoln Center, New York, and in Boston and London, Here All Night returns home for its Irish premiere. Judy Hegarty Lovett has directed a work that celebrates both Beckett’s use of music and song in his novel Watt and the inherent musicality of his writing. With an original score by UK composer Paul Clark, and improvised fiddle by Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, the work has evolved to include a collaboration with distinguished Irish artist Brian O’Doherty (Inside the White Cube) as well as movement by Irish choreographer John Scott. Here All Night features soprano Melanie Pappenheim, actor Conor Lovett and musicians Caoimhín O’Raghallaigh (hardanger d’amore), Chris Allan (cello), John Paul Gandy (piano) and a six part female choir from the US & UK and is a truly international collaboration. “An evening of wild, immersive delight” Daily Telegraph PRESENTED BY GARE ST LAZARE IRELAND DIRECTED BY JUDY HEGARTY LOVETT FEATURING MELANIE PAPPENHEIM, CONOR LOVETT, CAOIMHÍN O’RAGHALLAIGH, CHRIS ALLAN, JOHN PAUL GANDY

For faster introduction to jazz, consider attending the workshops at the Jazz Lab: thejazzlabdublin.com We meet at 8pm and prepare the stage area, bring amps, etc. Consider coming at 8pm! We start playing around 8:30pm. The jam finishes at 11pm. About 10 minutes are necessary to clean up after the jam.
